Gerard Heemskerk, Perennial Expert
When it comes to finding exciting new perennials for our Dutch Gardens customers, one of our bestand most enthusiasticsources is Gerard Heemskerk. Gerard grows more than 2,000 varieities of daylilies, irises, peonies, hostas and other perennials on his 60-acre farm in Noordwijkerhout. Gerard is a third-generation grower who has been working in the business since the tender age of 16. Over the years, he has completed dozens of horticultural courses to expand his knowledge of perennials, and has traveled to more than ten different countries looking for new plants and learning new growing techniques. His company, which he runs with his wife and brother, now employs 30 people. Their focus is on working in harmony with nature to produce the highest quality perennials with the least amount of chemicals. Several years ago, Gerard began implementing a macro-biological approach to his farming techniques, called "soil food web." This strategy is focused on improving the health of the soil, and encouraging naturally-occurring pest- and disease-fighting organisms. He has been very pleased with the results. One of Gerhard's most famous plant introductions is the hosta Francee. He introduced this variety back in 1985, and today it remains one of the best and most popular variegated hostas in the world. He recently discovered a hosta with all-white foliage that he named White Veder, and is also working on several new forms and colors of daylilies. There are few people who are more passionate about perennials than Gerard. In fact, he says his biggest business problem is that he tends to grow the varieties he loves most, rather than the varieties that would be in the best interest of his business! After almost 40 years as a grower, Gerard finds his love of flowers is stronger than ever. |
